Louis XVI Style Trumeau Panel with Trompe L'oeil Mirror Panel
About the Item
Possibly late 18th century but most likely 19th century painted arched painted panel. Either a panel intended for a trumeau or to be inset into wall boiserie as a trumeau. The upper panel typical courting scene with dog and orientalist courtier set in forest, castle in background. The bottom, a trompe l'oeil ( trick of the eye ) of sconces reflecting in the mirror panel. Apparently original stretcher. Tightly trimmed in tacks, ready to hang.
Significant patches to the reverse, suggesting old repair but not readily transparent on front., probably made to thicken or re-enforce thinning canvas. Losses to paint throughout. Wear to edges as seen.
