About the Item

A rare magnificent mid-19th century Old English Master portrait painting of a gentleman seated and framed in a giltwood frame. This piece was painted in 1858 just after the subject's death in 1854. This piece is a copy of the original painting of 1853 by S. Sidley which he painted just before Oldham’s death. On board, it is framed in a beautiful gilt frame with decorative crown detail at the top. The subject is Thomas Oldham of Mottram-in-Longdendale parish, a small English village. Oldham was born April 17th, 1784, and died on October 9th, 1854 Oldham is seated and shown from the mid breast up. He sports blonde yellow hair with a low short beard. He wears a black jacket and tie above a white collared shirt. The details of his face are quite impeccable and painted with great care and detail. He stares in a pensive state, off to the side. His skin tone features rosy red cheeks and light craquelure. In verso, the details of the piece are found with the history of the painting of the artist, the sitter as well as the original painter. It also outlines the details of cleaning. It reads, "N. 3 This being on a water ground to be only cleaned with damp leather.” Longdendale is sub-district in the district of Ashton-under-Lyne, and county of Chester; containing the townships of Mottram, Hattersley, Hollingworth, and Tintwistle, in Mottram-in-Longdendale parish. The full name of Mottram in Longdendale was established by 1308 - literally meaning "the place where meetings are held in the dale of the long valley". This is a magnificent example of realism during the Victorian period. Copies of works created within the same time period are important, as they speak to the original artist's technique and popularity, and are often, (Dependent on the artist.) more sought after than the original. Breaks to top of the frame have been repaired.
