An enchanting mythological painting from the 18th century by Benigne Gagneraux. Created in France during the latter years of the 1700s, this artwork portrays a mythical pair of blue-tinted horses alongside a lion with human-like facial features, gripping one of the riders with its teeth who appears to have lost his spear. In the backdrop lies a verdant forest set against majestic mountains, while the sky looms ominously with dark grey, stormy clouds. Encased within an exquisite giltwood frame adorned with intricate regal floral motifs. Benigne Gagneraux (1756-1795) was a talented French painter of the late 18th century, known for his exquisite portraiture and historical scenes. Born in Dijon, France, Gagneraux demonstrated remarkable artistic abilities from a young age and received formal training at the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture in Paris. His works often displayed a keen attention to detail, with a particular emphasis on capturing the nuances of expression and emotion in his subjects. Gagneraux's career flourished during the tumultuous years of the French Revolution, and he gained recognition for his ability to depict the revolutionary fervor and the dramatic events of the era. Despite his promising talent, Gagneraux's life was tragically cut short at the age of 39 during the Reign of Terror.
