Oil Seascape of Corniche de l'Estérel in the French Riviera by Jehan Berjonneau
About the Item
'Corniche de l'Esterel' by Jehan Berjonneau (1890-1966), this artwork captures the stunning beauty of the Corniche de l'Esterel, also known as the Corniche d’Or, a marvellous road nestled between the Esterel mountains and the beautiful turquoise sea in the French Riviera. The views along this route are truly spectacular, with vibrant red rock formations contrasting against the deep azure waters, spanning from St-Raphaël to Cannes. The piece is elegantly framed in a 19th-century wooden frame adorned with gilded stucco. The dimensions, including the frame are 81 x 72 centimeters.
The painting is signed.
Jehan Berjonneau was a renowned French painter and wood engraver. He was born in Montmorillon in 1890 into a humble family of farmers. Self-taught, it is likely that his childhood, spent surrounded by nature and animals, cultivated his power and skill of observation. Initially trained as a house painter, he worked for the French National Railway Company (S.N.C.F.) as a trackside painter. During the First World War, he became a prisoner of war in a German camp. It was during this time that he decided to dedicate his life to painting, capturing his fellow detainees and captors on canvas.
Starting in October 1919, his name appeared among the participants in the 3rd Exhibition of the Arc-en-ciel, a Franco-Anglo-American group. Between the two world wars, he gained a certain level of recognition and travelled throughout Europe, North Africa, and the United States. From 1919 to 1935, he established a museum in Montmorillon in the Vienne department to which he donated a collection on the subject of prehistory and selected paintings from his own works. He was a member of the Colonial Society of French Artists, the Salon des Indépendants, the Salon d'Automne, and the Salon des Tuileries, regularly exhibiting at these different salons. His son, Raoul Berjonneau (1911-1988), also became a painter. Jehan Berjonneau passed away in 1966 in Paris at the age of 75.

An oil painting on canvas, it is signed by the artist, Robert Delval (1934-) and dated 2008. The use of colours, perspective, depth, and form in this artwork demonstrates the influence of the artistic styles of Henri Matisse and Pierre Bonnard, which Robert Delval saw as artistic inspirations. Robert Delval, born in 1934 in Montmartre, Paris, cultivated his artistic skills amidst the street painters of his childhood neighbourhood, drawing inspiration from books and museums. At twenty-five, he embarked on a European and American journey armed solely with brushes and notebooks. Upon returning to France, he divided his time, spending spring and summer on the Mediterranean coast and autumn and winter in Megève, selling his watercolours to passers-by, including the likes of Françoise Sagan. One of his small gouache pieces, depicting a view of the Luxembourg Garden, caught the eye of André Roussard, a Montmartre framer...Category
