About the Item

A particularly atmospheric painting of a woman with a hat, in oil on Isorel board. Date estimated around 1930. Signed H. Scheiber. It's quite a large painting and it has the characteristic colours, shapes and a particularly catchy and attractive subject. Scheibers' paintings with stylish, colourful ladies are very sought after pieces for collectors and interior designers. The artwork is completely original, no alterations made. It combines beautifully with Art Deco objects in either a classic, or artistic/eclectic environment. Scheiber was an extremely prolific, fast-working artist. His oeuvre consists of thousands of works. Many of his works were painted on an early 1920s invented hardboard, called ''Isorel''. Like this one is as well. See on last two pictures the artist Hugo Scheiber (source: Wikipedia) Background information: The Hungarian Hugó Scheiber , well known for his avant-garde, modernist paintings, was a largely self-taught and instinctive talent. Born in 1873 in Budapest, he moved from Budapest to Vienna at the age of 8. His father worked as the title painter of the Prater, and taught him the basics of painting . In 1898, the family returned to Budapest. Around 1900, he trained at the College of Applied Arts. He was a soldier in the First World War. Until 1914, he painted landscapes and still lifes as well as portraits, often in oil, showing the influence of Impressionism. In the 1910s, his style was influenced by German expressionism, and he developed his new stylized world of colors and shapes. Visiting Budapest in the 1920s, Herwarth Walden, the founder of the Der Sturm gallery and art magazine, immediately recognized his talent and invited him to Berlin. He started to support Scheiber financially and presented Scheiber's works over the years. In 1921, he held a first exhibition in the Berlin gallery together with his friend Béla Kádár. After 1924 he held exhibitions at least once every year, a.o. with László Moholy-Nagy, and in 1928 with Kurt Schwitters. Walden often published Scheiber's works in his art magazine. His drawings and paintings were noticed in England and America: there have been exhibitions in London and New York, in NY he participated in the Brooklyn Museum's Modern Art exhibition in 1926, which played a significant role in his career. In 1930, he organized an exhibition in Vienna. At the invitation of Filippo Tommaso Marinetti, who was staying in Budapest, he also participated in the Roman exhibition of the Futurists in 1933. In his opening speech, Marinetti referred to him as one of the most important contemporary painters. In a significant part of his works, he captures the essence of modern, metropolitan life. Scheiber struggled with constant existential problems. He often sold his pictures for pennies or even a lunch. He survived the Holocaust in the Budapest ghetto which took great toll on his health. He died in 1950. His grave is located in the Jewish cemetery on Kozma Street.

Wear consistent with age and use. Minor fading. This piece is in its original condition, painting itself in good condition with small signs iof aging. The frame has some signs of wear and is not the best quality. It does add to the authentic appearance of the piece.
