Pair of 18th Century Genre Scenes P.t. Van Wijngaerdt , 1816-1893

About the Item

Pair of oils on mahogany panel representing genre scenes occurring in the XVIIIth century. but painted around 1870-80, signed lower left P. van Wijngaerdt. Two servants are clearing a table and finishing the guests' drinks. A waitress is removing a dish containing a piece of meat, with the guests in the background. From the Dutch school, Petrus Theodorus van Wijngaerdt, portrait painter and lithographer, was born in Rotterdam on 7 March 1816, and died in Haarlem in May 1893. A pupil of J.H. van der Laar, he worked in Rotterdam until 1837, in Delft until 1838, The Hague in 1857, then London in 1860. He exhibited many times in Rotterdam, The Hague and Amsterdam.
