About the Item

This beautiful antique oil on board paintings were created in France, circa 1942. Each painting, set in an ornate, carved gilt frame, features an iconic landmark on the “Île de la Cite” in Paris. One painting depicts "Notre-Dame" cathedral with people chatting in the foreground. The other is about the famous "Le Marche aux Fleurs" in front of the Conciergerie where Marie Antoinette was kept in captivity during the French Revolution. Both compositions are signed by French artist A. Michel on the lower left and lower right and one is dated 1942. Both pieces are in excellent condition with wonderful palette of colors in the manner of Eugene Galien Laloue. Notre-Dame de Paris is a medieval Catholic cathedral on the Île de la Cité. The cathedral is consecrated to the Virgin Mary and considered to be one of the finest examples of French Gothic architecture. Its pioneering use of the rib vault and flying buttress, its enormous and colorful rose windows, as well as the naturalism and abundance of its sculptural decoration set it apart from the earlier Romanesque style. Major components that make Notre Dame stand out include one of the world's largest organs and its immense church bells The cathedral's construction was begun in 1160 under Bishop Maurice de Sully and was largely complete by 1260, though it was modified frequently in the following centuries. In the 1790s, Notre-Dame suffered desecration during the French Revolution; much of its religious imagery was damaged or destroyed. In the 19th century, the cathedral was the site of the coronation of Napoleon I and funerals of many Presidents of the Republic. While undergoing renovation and restoration, the roof of Notre-Dame caught fire on the evening of 15 April 2019. Burning for around 15 hours, the cathedral sustained serious damage, including the destruction of the flèche (the timber spire over the crossing) and most of the lead-covered wooden roof above the stone vaulted ceiling. The famous “Flowers Market" (Marché aux fleurs) has been located since 1808 on the Ile de la Cité, Place Louis Lépine, and Quai de la Corse along the Seine. Halfway between a covered and open-air market, the flower market is made up of six 1900-era pavilions, around tree-lined walkways. In these stalls, you can find a very wide variety of flowers, plants, and shrubs, and even decorative items, especially around Christmas. Measures: 14.25" W x 12" H.

Hand painted on stretched canvas in France circa 1940, each large artwork depicts a popular Parisian landmark in the impressionist style, "la Cathedrale Notre Dame" and "Le Marche aux Fleurs et la Conciergerie". Caroline Barnett (1877-1950) was an American-born artist who studied in Paris towards the earlier part of her career; she was known for her Impressionist street scenes of Paris. Her painting style reflected the contemporary movement that was occurring in France during her time there. Caroline Burnett paintings also display hints of abstract influence, especially her figural paintings. She was a member of the Societe de Beaux-Arts in Paris, where she exhibited her works in 1898.
