Philip H. Calderon “Poor girl begging for handouts” Oil on Canvas London 1860

About the Item

Philip Hermogenes Calderon (1833-1898) was one of the most renowned and brilliant British artists of the 19th century. He studied in Paris and London and painted in Pre-Raphaelite style before moving towards historical genre. His paintings could be found in National Gallery, Tate and National Portrait Gallery in London ,UK. He was as well appointed Keeper London Royal Academy in 1887. Calderon’s choice of subjects was always personal and therefor touching hearts of everyone looking at his paintings. Most of his pictures tell a story, usually one of his own invention, sometimes a subject from history or literature. In the 19th century, in Victorian times, rapid change of employment, housing and social welfare brought about a huge change in people’s lives. The period of adjustment led to many workers and their children living in extreme poverty and even dying on city streets of starvation. The poor often lived in unsanitary conditions, in cramped and unclean houses, regardless of whether they lived in a modern city or a rural town. A little early on, world renowned British author Charles Dickens raised an awareness about this subject in his famous novel “Oliver Twist” where he talks about the impact of poverty,- Oliver, an orphan, spends his early years in grim institutions. Like Calderon’s little poor girl on his painting, -asking for food or small change to survive the dark and hungry times. The painting is extremely touching and makes a viewer feel for this poor child. It has been masterfully painted and an absolute true museum's piece.
