"Rhythm, " Design for Art Deco Folding Screen w/ Nudes, Gold, Magenta & Charcoal

About the Item

Dating to the late 1930s or early 1940s, this fabulous design -- entitled "Rhythm" -- for an Art Deco folding screen depicts several nude figures in various dance poses, in shades of pale ivory and charcoal with vivid magenta hair. They are situated amidst tree limbs on a pale sand-colored ground, probably to indicate that the screen would have used gold leaf for the background. There is a child to one side and an undulating landscape below in a palette of pumpkin, magenta and grey. The artist was Adelaide Briggs, who completed her studies at Cornell University in 1938 and went on to pursue an important and successful career as a painter. The medium is gouache on paper.

"Peace and Prosperity, " Art Deco Mural Design for Fort Meade, Maryland

This ink and watercolor painting was the winning submission for a large mural at Fort Meade in Maryland in 1951, solicited by a design competition and intended for one of the service clubs. We do not know if the mural was actually painted, but it does not survive today. The theme of "Peace and Prosperity" was a classic subject in the post-World War II era, and the soldier-artist -- Achille Forgione...

"Bulls and Grasshoppers", Original Art Deco Painting for Wallpaper Design, 1920s
Located in Philadelphia, PA
Brilliantly executed in primary colors -- scarlet, deep sky blue, yellow and white -- this original painting (not a pochoir) depicts an interwoven array of Egyptian symbols -- including Apsis the bull, symbol of fertility; grasshoppers, and ancient column capitals. Executed in France, probably as the basis for a 1920s wallpaper design, the firm's name and the artist's name are both signed in ink or pencil. In the 1920s, archaeological expeditions led by Howard Carter and others in Egypt led to the discovery in 1922 of the treasure of Tutankhamun...

"Five Josephs, " Important Art Deco Painting w/ Male Nudes, Provincetown, 1930s
By William L'Engle
Located in Philadelphia, PA
An extraordinary example of Art Deco painting with allegorical meaning -- like so many murals painted in the 1920s and 1930s -- this large work by William L'Engle depicts five nude male figures laboring in the field, symbolizing life in Provincetown, Massachusetts. A Black male figure in the foreground is planting crops, while two other figures in the distance are pulling a rope, perhaps alluding to fishing boats tied up at the dock, while another nude seems to be sinking into sleep beneath a pier -- all with the waters of the Atlantic Ocean in the background. L'Engle called this "The Five Josephs," perhaps referring to Joseph of Arimathea and other figures in the New Testament. William L'Engle was a towering figure in the Provincetown art colony, and was extremely well connected with America's artistic elite, starting with his trip to Europe as a young man with Waldo Pierce and George Biddle. Over time, William and his life Lucy became close to a wide range of important figures in painting, theater and the arts, including Charles Hawthorne, Eugene O'Neill, Gerrit Beneker, John Dos Passos, Edmund Wilson and Mary McCarthy, William and Marguerite Zorach, Edna St. Vincent-Millay, Charles Demuth, Childe Hassam, George Biddle, Edwin Dickinson...
