About the Item

A set of three 19th century Oval Marine Paintings painted on wooden board of the famous fully documented steamships named Xarifa, Allemania and Sirio. All are signed with a double capitalised "A " separted by an anchor. Full name of the artist is unknown Xarifa was a wooden-hulled, seagoing sailing yacht equipped with an auxiliary steam engiine. It was built in 1896 at Cowes, Isle of Wight, England, by John S. White & Co., Ltd. Apparently completed as Xarifa, she served for a time as Ophelie before she was purchased by C. N. Nelson in, or sometime before, 1911. She then resumed the name Xarifa and operated out of Port Washington, Long Island, N.Y. After the outbreak of World War I, the Navy acquired the yacht on 9 August 1917 for service in European waters and designated her SP-581. However, while the ship was being fitted out, she was found to be unsuitable for "distant service" and was prepared for duty on section patrol. Assigned to the 3rd Naval District, Xarifa was commissioned at the New York Navy Yard on 23 February 1918, Lt. (jg.) F. J. Littlefield, USNRF, in command; and patrolled the approaches to New York harbor through the armistice. She was decommissioned on 31 March 1919 and returned to her owner on 4 May 1919. SS Sirio was a 4,141-ton, 5,012-horsepower Italian merchant steamer built in 1883 in Glasgow and was owned by Navigazione Generale Italiana of Genoa. She sailed on the Raggio Line, operated by the Societa Italiana di Transporti Maritimi Raggio & Co. It was shipwrecked off the eastern Spanish coast on August 4, 1906, causing the deaths of at least 150 Italian and Spanish emigrants bound for Brazil, Uruguay, and Argentina. The shipwreck gained notoriety because the captain, Giuseppe Piccone, abandoned ship at the first opportunity. The wreck had a profound effect on communities in northern Italy and was remembered in popular songs of the era. The S.S. Allemannia belonged to the Hamburg America Line. It was built 1865 at Southampton by C. A. Day & Co. 2,695 gross tons. Its length was only 315 feet and width 41 feet. t It had its maiden voyage on 11 May It could hold a total of 760 passengers and a crew of 90. Some of its fully documented voyages include 1865 Sept. 17, maiden voyage Hamburg-Southampton-New York 1872 Re-engined with compound engines by Reiherstieg Atlantic 1880 Sold to British owners, renamed "Oxenholme 1894 Shipwrecked near Santa Catharina, Brazil.
