Signed Antique Pastoral Sheep Painting in Giltwood Frame, Belgium, 19th Century

About the Item

Signed in the lower right corner (by Belgian artist “J. L. Van Leemputten”), this antique pastoral sheep painting is from the late 1800s. The peaceful scene of a shepherdess in a red dress with a white bonnet and apron with her seven sheep is surrounded by a giltwood frame adorned with olive leaves, fluted cavetto molding, and a border of repeating roundels. Cloud coverage has helped create a beautiful sunset, rendering a pink, blue, yellow, and orange sky. There are rolling hills in the background as the flock and its herdswoman stop by a tall tree next to the dirt road surrounded by lush grass. Jef (Joseph) Louis Van Leemputten was a Belgian artist born in 1865 in the small village of Werchter. Known for painting landscapes and animals, Van Leemputten was an established “Realist” whose father, Jean Baptiste Van Leemputten, was also an established painter. The younger Van Leemputten studied under Charles Verlat, the famed Belgian artist.

Antique French Oil on Canvas Stag Hunt Painting in Giltwood Frame, H. De Forges
Located in Dallas, TX
A beautiful oil on canvas rendering of a stag hunt, presented in a fluted giltwood frame with a bundled husk border and large, parted leaves in the corners. The painting is signed in the lower right corner by the artist, “H. de Forges”, a member of the Barbizon French school of the late 1800s, who specialized in animal hunt scenes. The vibrancy of de Forges’ painting has not diminished over time; the colors seem to pop right off the canvas. A blue sky with some low-lying white clouds hangs above trees mainly bereft of leaves, indicating it is late autumn. Slender grass, ranging from green to brown, surrounds a watering hole in the middle of a clearing, with a single stag near the water’s edge. Eight white hunting dogs with black and tan markings surround the deer on one side of the pond. Behind the pack is a brown horse ridden by a huntsman dressed in red and black, preparing to sound the hunting horn. Two more riders in red, black, and white, also on brown horses, are emerging from a small hill behind the deer. Hunting, always a very important pastime in France, became one of the more popular genres in 19th century art, along with with quality pastoral and landscape paintings. Realism was a defining feature of the Barbizon School, as artists were attracted to spending more time living and painting in the natural world. Our hunt scene depicts the surrounding of prey, or pre-hunt revelry. The beautifully colored oil on canvas stag hunt painting...

19th Century Dutch Sheep Painting in Carved Gilt Frame Signed Frans Lebret
By Frans Lebret 1
Located in Dallas, TX
Set in the original carved gilt wood frame, this antique oil on canvas was crafted in Europe circa 1860. Signed in the lower right corner by Dutch artist, Frans Lebret, the charming pastoral painting captures a serene interior barn scene filled with rustic warmth and intimate detail. At the center, a group of sheep reclines peacefully on a bed of straw, joined by a rooster and a hen, all softly illuminated by daylight streaming in through an open doorway. To the left, a woman and child stand quietly near a wooden support beam, their presence suggesting a gentle guardianship over the animals. The structure of the barn its beams, rafters, and shadowed recesses are rendered with atmospheric depth, evoking a sense of shelter and tranquility. Outside the barn, a glimpse of tiled rooftops and blue sky connects the calm interior to the rural world beyond. The painting is presented in a lavishly ornate gilded frame, carved with baroque scrolls and acanthus leaves, which enhances its timeless, bucolic character. This work is a tender tribute to the harmony between humans, animals, and agrarian life. The art work is in excellent condition with great details and beautiful pastel colors; it is set in a splendid and elegant gold leaf frame with floral and leaf motifs in high relief. Artist listed in the Benezit. The canvas has been relined. Frans Lebret (1820-1909) was born in Dordrecht and was known for his Dutch landscapes mainly with sheep.
