Signed and dated ‘R. Madrazo, 1880' (lower left). At the bottom center of the impressive frame there is a gilded, wooden cartouch bearing in italicized script “Portrait of Isabelle McCreery.” This is original to the frame. Sometime after the death of the artist, possibly at the time the painting was given to the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, the painter’s name was added in block letters.

The work of Raimundo de Madrazo, an artist who lived in Paris the greater part of his life, is among the most representative and influential of the ‘school’ of Spanish painters resident in Paris during the nineteenth century.” (Carlos González and Montse Martí, Spanish Painters in Paris 1850-1900, London, 1989, p. 53). The wonderful imagination and artistic genius of Madrazo y Garreta established his fine reputation, and created an international demand for his exquisite portraiture. This particular work features an elegant woman who gracefully exits a litter, situated within a lovely fairytale setting of a fantastical vista dominated by verdant and blue-green hues. Isabelle McCreery was a member of the noted Gold Rush pioneer McCreery family of Irish background who settled in San Francisco in the mid nineteenth century. Signed to the lower right hand corner with the initials ‘TK’ for Thomas Koenig. The reverse with impressed ‘KPM’ mark beneath a sceptre to the lower right and the centre inscribed with the registered mark of the Munich porcelain painter Th. Koenig, in the form of an armorial crest with a putti supporting a banner inscribed ‘Munchen’, an artists palette and a shield bearing the initials ‘TK’. It is further inscribed with the size code ‘30. E’ .
Thomas Koenig, was a renowned porcelain artist with a studio in Munich, active in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
The original oil painting this plaque is based on is entitled ‘The Betrothal’ or ‘Bound for Life’ and was painted in 1883, by the German painter Otto Erdmann (1834-1905).
Otto Wilhelm Eduard Erdmann (born Leipzig 1834 – died Duusseldorf 1905) was a German Realist painter, heavily influenced by Impressionism and famous for his fine interior scenes with figures from the eighteenth century. Works by Erdmann are displayed in the museum of Cologne, Düsseldorf, and Leipzig.
Founded in Berlin in 1750 ‘KPM’ or 'Koenigliche Porzellan-Manufaktur' acquired its name and Royal patronage when the Prussian king, Frederick the Great, purchased the manufactory in 1760.
Its distinguished trademark from then on became the royal blue sceptre, which is stamped (painted prior to 1837) on every piece. All painted pieces produced by KPM are signed by the painter.

The sitter was the daughter of Lord Carnarvon who discovered Tutankhamen's tomb and she was one of the first to enter the tomb in 1922. She was the first woman to do so.
This painting was exhibited in the same Gallery as the Roscommon Dragoon by Orpen, also in this category……namely the Ballyrickart Gallery of Irish Art in Ireland.

Considered a beauty of the age, Dorothy, Lady Brownlow was painted on a number of occasions by some of the most talented and respected artists of the day; Kneller, Riley, Closterman, Dahl and Wissing, all rendered her features in oil for posterity. The portrait presented here is by Jan van der Vaart who from 1685-1687 was employed by Willem Wissing as a drapery and landscape painter. After Wissing’s death in 1687 he practiced as an independent portraitist much in the style of his master with some influence also of Kneller. This work is in fact the head and shoulders taken from Wissing’s three-quarter length of Lady Brownlow which hangs at Belton House, Lincolnshire and produced as a mezzotint in 1687. Van der Vaart has made some intriguing alterations particularly as the sitter now looks directly at us, appearing rather more provocative and self assured of her beauty. The confident rendering of the dress and pearls and the thickly drawn copious hair are hallmarks of Van der Vaart’s work. It is likely he completed this portrait – shortly after Wissing’s version – as a smaller variant intended for another family member as was often the practice.
Dorothy Mason married Sir William Brownlow 4th Bt. in July 1688; she was the daughter and heir of Sir Richard Mason a politician and courtier to Charles II who owned estates at Bishop’s Castle, Salop and Sutton Surrey. She came from, and married into extreme wealth; her dowry upon marriage was £10,000 and on her death her husband inherited the estates that were once her father’s.
In June 1697 William Brownlow succeeded his brother to the baronetcy and to most of his landed estates including Belton House. In 1698 he abandoned his Peterborough seat to contest Bishop’s Castle on behalf of his wife and in the interest of his mother-in-law, Lady Anna Mason...
