The softly collected and intimate dimension suggested by the present pair of paintings underlines, together with the saints appearing in adoration, the totally private dimension of the order. The saints chosen at the feet of the Madonna and Child are in fact Francesco di Paola and Gregorio Magno, immediately recognizable by the wise features, by the Franciscan habit and by the crosier supported by a putto, the other by the triple crown placed on the ground as a sign of respect. Most likely made as ex votos, as a tribute to the patrons or as preparatory models for two altarpieces, if the saints were to reflect their names, the paintings are offered for specular and meditated composition. An inflamed colorism lights up the veils of the Madonna, enhancing their prominent position with respect to the saint in her presence, and warming the remaining part of the composition with sweet intimacy.
The compositional balance, the quality of the drawing and the plastic consistency of the drapery allow the painter's hand to be brought closer to the sphere of Giambettino Cignaroli (1706-1770), a Venetian painter, working in different cities in northern Italy. Painted probably during the artist's time studying at the Hague or in his travels afterwards down the east coast of the United States circa 1920, the artwork is set in a carved gilt wood frame. The piece illustrates a picturesque little pier in the impressionist style, and is signed in the lower left corner "A. Thieme," the signature of Anthony Thieme (1888–1954). The oil on canvas painting shows several fishing boats with sails hanging moored at a small coastal docking area surrounded by buildings, with people moving about the pier, fishermen milling around on the boats, and seagulls flying overhead. The early 20th-century painting is in excellent condition commensurate with age and use, and adorns rich, vibrant colors; throughout the piece, the viewer gets a sense of the artist's expertise in the rendering of space, light and a beautifully hazy atmosphere, as he was referred to "The Master of Light and Shadow". Ekaterina Nikolaevna Kachura (also Katschura)-Falileeva was born in 1886 in Warsaw (at that time - Russian Empire) as daughter of Major-General serving in Volynski Guards Regiment, N. S. Rogal-Kachura. She studied at secondary all-girls school in Kamenets-Podolsk (now West Ukraine). In 1907 she graduated the painting class of Odessa Art College and, in the same year, entered Imperial Academy of Fine Arts, where she studied until 1914 and where her teachers were D. N. Kardovski and N. N. Dubovskoy. Parallel to her studies at the Academy she attended the academic studio of engraver Professor V. V. Mate.
