About the Item

Large painted copper enamel of neo-Renaissance style depicting a scene of musketeers seated in front of a fireplace and playing chess. The polychrome is bright, shimmering with highlights in shades of gold, the tones are frank and bright. Blackened wooden frame, enameled picture signed on the monogram of the master enameller. This work evokes example, mistaking it, the artistic revolution of the late nineteenth century. We find the troubadour style in which art nouveau has its roots as did Eugène-Emmanuel Viollet-le-Duc (1814-1879) with the neo-Gothic movement that pastiche medieval architecture. Enamel of very high quality, in perfect condition. NOTE: The museum of Reims has in its inventory a scene of musketeers seated at a fireplace, cards in hands, signed by the master enameller. Reference: Musée D'Orsay; Artist's note n ° 129473 Literature: Limoges, the Art of Enamel, Jean-Marc Ferrer & Véronique Notin Théophile Soyer (July 23, 1853-20, February 1940) His father, Paul Soyer, gold medal in 1878, created after the War of 1870 the famous workshop of 4 bis, rue Saint-Sauveur in Paris which produced innumerable pieces including some for jewelry, furniture and bronze. Théophile attended the classes of Yvon and Levasseur and began at the Salon of 1870 with the enamel copy of a work by Le Barbier aîné. He then exhibited regularly from 1875 to 1882. After her marriage in 1879 with Léa, born Dejoux, nicknamed Lucie, a student of Lamunière, he shared the direction of the house with her, as he shared in his company the walls of some showrooms. He won a silver medal at the 1889 World's Fair and a gold medal at the 1900. He is president of the Eclectic Society, a humorous society founded in 1872 and vice-president of the Union's Chamber of Ceramics and Glass. NOTE: Michel Dillange, great-grandson of Théophile Soyer, published the elements of a non-exhaustive biography which he communicated on June 10, 1992 to the Société Nationale des Antiquaires de France. It refers to the article by Daniel Alcouffe of 1978.
