About the Item

Two separate watercolor views of the California Rancho structure "Casa de Estudillo" by Willet S. Foster, painted in 1931. This compound also has been referred to as the inspiration for the home of the fictional character "Ramona", from the once popular book and play. Painted on water color paper, the two pieces are still bright and colorful. They have a yellowing in tone of the blue sky from the original color (which were found under the exterior top edges below the mat, now removed). They paintings are unframed without matting. The edges on all for sides show the pierced holes from steel thumb tacks, along with some minor losses. Both paintings are signed in pencil.

Hillman, grew up on a strawberry ranch in Pajaro, graduated from Watsonville High School in 1916, and served in France during World War I. He later worked for Martinelli's Apple Cider plant and became foreman. Lillie's mother, Esther C. Hobson, moved as an infant from Bakersfield to Santa Cruz with her family in 1901, when they founded Hobson's Bath House at the Santa Cruz Boardwalk...
