About the Item

Very fine and large KPM porcelain plaque of The Three Fates German, c.1908 Frame: height 90cm, width 77cm, depth 9cm Plaques: height 53cm, width 43cm, depth 0.5cm This exceptional painted porcelain plaque by the important manufactory K.P.M. depicts the three fates or Moirai from Greek mythology, after a painting by the artist F. P. Thumann (German, 1834-1908). Executed by Louis Scherf (1870-1955), it shows Atropos, Lachesis and Clotho, the three figures who in the imagination of the Greeks controlled the threads of each human life from start to end. The eldest of the three figures, Atropos, is shown on the left, holding a pair of scissors as she cuts a thread. Lachesis, to the right, and age-wise the middle of the three measures the threads, while Clotho, the youngest, a depicted as a radiant beauty, spins them. This plaque replicates this iconic composition with exquisite detail and faithful artistry, and is signed to the lower right 'L. Scherf nach P. Thumann,' for the painters involved. The back is marked with the KPM sceptre, and inscribed, 'KPM 381 - 538.' The Royal Porcelain Manufacture Berlin (KPM) was founded in 1763 by Frederick II of Prussia (Frederick the Great). Its actual origins, however, lie in three private enterprises, which, under crown patronage, were trying to establish the production of white gold (porcelain) in Berlin from the mid-18th century onwards. Louis Scherf (1870 - 1955) was an outstanding master in painting on porcelain. More than 80 of his porcelain plaques are part of the internationally renowned porcelain collection of the Palazzo Pitti in Florence.

A wonderful late 19th-early 20th Berlin K.P.M. porcelain rectangular plaque Painted landscape scene with two women and their children playing, the background with two men, one playing an instrument. Impressed K.P.M and scepter marks, in the original frame. KPM is an acronym for Königliche Porzellan-Manufaktur Berlin, which translates to “Royal Porcelain Factory in Berlin.” The company was founded in 1763 by Frederick II of Prussia, who bought the factory from its previous owner, Johann Ernst Gotzkowsky, in the wake of its bankruptcy. Frederick II greatly admired the factory’s “white gold,” a type of porcelain so fine and translucent that it closely mirrored the high-quality porcelain made in China. He invested large sums of money into the company and granted it the use of the royal scepter...
