Vintage America's Cup Seascape, circa 1960.

About the Item

Vintage America's Cup Seascape, English School, circa 1960s, unsigned, an oil on hardwood panel seascape with a starboard-side view portrait of the Schooner-Rigged Yacht "America" under full sail closely-hauled on a port tack, with crew visible on deck, American ensign flying off the main gaff, and a swallowtail "Going Home" flag flying at the main peak. This painting was done for Tonkin's Antiques on Nantucket back in the 1960s, and in fact was kept by them and hung in their home. Their label remains on the reverse, inscribed "Americas Cup, S.Y. America." The painting was done on a very heavy hardwood panel, likely reclaimed barn board, and is mounted in a very heavy carved pine frame. All remains in excellent condition. Measures: 23-3/4 in H x 35-3/8 in W Framed: 28-7/8 in H x 40-1/2 in W x 3-1/2 in Deep

    Seascape with Clippership by George Howell Gay (American: 1858 - 1931), circa 1890, an oil on canvas bow view of a clippership under full sail, running with stun'sls and skysails set, on lively sea under blue cloudy sky, with a second square-rigger visible in the background, signed in the lower right, and titled on the reverse "Clipper Ship Before the Wind." A beautiful and dramatic painting with a cool, brisk feel. The painting is in fine condition, with one small patch along the upper margin and a tiny spot of corresponding inpainting.
