Vintage Chinese Watercolor and Ink Landscape of Senjojiki Cirque, Near Nagoya
About the Item
The detail of this mountainous landscape of an area that is akin to the Alps in Japan is stunning. It is a watercolor and ink depiction of Senjojiki Cirque which is at the top of the Nakagoshodani Valley, a beautiful setting.
The painting is lush, pastoral and green depicting warmer weather in the summer or fall. The bamboo and pine trees connote luck and good fortune. The remarkable detailed mountainous scene with the small house is a traditional scene. There is calligraphy and a seal in the lower righthand corner of the piece. The appraiser does not recognize the artist's signature.
The Chinese watercolors used for this painting are mineral and vegetable pigments, premixed with some sort of binder. Our appraiser says they are used in the same way as Western watercolors by adding water, then after painting, they fix perfectly on the rice paper.
These paintings were highly coveted and replicated traditionally. The scale of this piece makes it rather rare and the condition is quite good. This painting will be delivered by white glove shipping to preserve the artwork and to ensure it arrives at its destination intact.

- Condition:Wear consistent with age and use. This is a beautiful example of Chinese ink and watercolor on rice paper. It is worth adding to your collection. The frame shows signs of age and is a little worn, but it protects the art and could be easily replaced.
