Ruth Bernhard Signed Gelatin Silver Photograph Print Perspective II, 1967

About the Item

A beautiful and timeless image/photographic print by famed German-American photographer/artist Ruth Bernhard (1905-2006). This classic feminine nude study is titled "Perspective II". The gelatin silver photographic print is hand pencil signed by Bernhard in the lower right margin and hand pencil signed, titled, and dated (the original image was created in 1967. This is likely a later printing) with her photographer's stamp on the verso. Provenance: Peter Fetterman Gallery, Los Angeles (please see image of the original gallery purchase receipt). Ruth Bernard was born in Berlin, Germany on October 14, 1905. Her parents divorced when she was only two years old (purportedly she only saw her mother two more times in her lifetime). She studied art history and typography at the Berlin Academy of Art from 1925-1927 before immigrating to New York City where her father lived. In 1934, Bernhard began photographing nudes, particularly women. This, of course, would be the art form for which she would eventually become best known and famed. During the following years, Bernhard counted Margrethe Mather, Alfred Stieglitz, and Edward Weston among her colleagues and friends. In 1934, she produced photographs for the Museum of Modern Art’s (MOMA) first exhibition catalog. In the 1940s Bernard settled on the West Coast where she worked with Group f/64. In the 1950s she became colleagues with such renowned photographers as Ansel Adams, Imogen Cunningham, Minor White, Wynn Bullock, Dorothea Lange, and Minor White. In the 1980s Bernard worked on a book of nudes. Though initially rebuffed it was eventually released to much acclaim. In 1986, The Eternal Body won Photography Book of the Year from Friends of Photography and would later prove to be an inspiration and immeasurable help to future photographers and artists. The Eternal Body was eventually reprinted by Chronicle Books and later as a deluxe limited Centennial Edition in celebration of Ruth Bernhard's 100th birthday in October 2005. Bernard's numerous awards include: 1976 Dorothea Lange Award by the Oakland Museum 1987 Distinguished Career in Photography Award. Society of Photographic Education. Midwest Regional Conference, Chicago, Illinois November 8, 1987 1990 Presidential Citation for Outstanding Service to Utah State University. Logan, Utah, October 25, 1990 1994 Cyril Magnin Award for Distinguished Service in Photography. Presented by the San Francisco Chamber of Commerce 1996 Lifetime Achievement Award. Women's Caucus for Art. California Regional Chapter, Presented at Mills College, Oakland, March 30, 1996 1997 Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters. The Academy of Art, San Francisco, June 1, 1997 2003 Lucie Awards for achievement in fine art Today, her works can be found in numerous permanent collections, major international museums, and universities in the United States, Europe, Japan, and Mexico.
