About the Item

The Guinness Lithographs, First Series, 1956. A unique opportunity to acquire the complete set of 6 Guinness lithographs in Series 1. These works of art were commissioned by Guinness to promote the publication of the Guinness Book of Records, first published in 1955. This first series depicts various records as listed in the book. Six well known artists were commissioned to produce these works of art and the 6 are: 1) The Fattest Woman in the World, by Edward Ardizzone ( 1900 - 1979 ) 2) A Fisherman's Story, by Bernard Cheese ( 1925 - 2013 ) 3) The Darts Champion, by Barnett Freedman ( 1901 - 1958 ) 4) Cycle Racing, by Ronald Glendening ( 1926 - 2013 ) 5) Newmarket, by Edwin La Dell ( 1914 - 1970 ) 6) Southend Pier, by Brian Robb ( 1913 - 1979 ) Each artist was paid £200 for the finished Lithograph, all of which are the same size 48cm x 73.5cm, with a deadline of 1st June 1956. They were printed by Curwen Press, based in Plaistow, London and from here they were distributed in a cardboard tube ( original tube is also included with this set ). This unique offer comprises of all 6 Lithoghraphs, all issued as a set at the same time; includes the original cardboard tube with Curwen Press address label and two 9d stamps, to the value of 7 1/2 pence! Finally, in addition to the above, there is an original copy of the 1st Guinness Book of Records, published in 1955. The Lithographs have never been mounted or frames and have retained their original colours and condition well, being stored within the original tube. Now extremely rare to find as a full set, plus the original book relating to the full story of these works of art. I have also included a contemporary book compiled by Emma Mason and printed in 2016. The price shown is for the full set and with the additional tube, original book and the full history book from 2106.
