About the Item
Old print of animals discovered and described during the travels of Captain Cook at different continents. Published by Alex Hogg at The Kings Arms, no.16 Paternoster Row.
All kinds of exotic animals were observed and depicted by the artists on the voyages, including these creatures from North America, Van Diemen’s Land (Tasmania) and the Arctic regions, (along with giraffes and hippopotamus in South Africa).
Title:
1) A young sea otter found off the north west coast of America.
2) An opossum, a quadruped of Van Diemen’s Land.
3) A white bear found in the Pacific ocean near Icy Cape.
Description: Plate 7 from Cook, J. 1784 “A new, authentic and complete collection of voyages round the world undertaken and performed by Royal Authority containing an authentic, entertaining, full and complete history of Captain Cook's first, second, third and last voyages undertaken by order of His present Majesty for making discoveries in geography, navigation, astronomy in the southern and northern hemispheres and successively performed in the years 1768, 1769, 1770, 1771-1772, 1773, 1774, 1775-1776, 1777, 1778, 1779, 1780…”.
