Arthur Wm. North (English) Etching of Joseph Conrad Dated 1912 Signed by Conrad

About the Item

A well-executed portrait etching of famous Polish-British author Joseph Conrad by Arthur William North ( English Late 19th century). The etching is pencil signed lower right "Arthur North" and annotated in pencil "Savage Club, London 1912" lower left. A bold pencil signature by Joseph Conrad himself is written across the base of the picture. The Savage Club was founded in the 19th century for artists, writers and actors and remains open today. Conrad (1857-1924) was one of the most famous and important writers of his era, penning Chance, Lord Jim, Heart of Darkness, Nostromo, The Lagoon and The Secret Agent among many others. He is regarded as one of the greatest authors in the English language, a master prose stylist considered a literary impressionist by some and an early modernist by others. He had a genius for companionship, his friends including Henry James, Hugh Walpole, Stephen Crane, George Bernard Shaw, H.G. Wells, Edith Wharton and many others. Conrad's work profoundly influenced a large group of English and American authors.
