About the Item

Balinese Batik Print by Suhirdiman, Signed & Dated 1976 Indonesia, 1976 A large and decorative batik print by Indonesian artist Suhirdiman, signed and dated 1976. Executed in deep indigo and ochre tones, the work depicts a stylised mythological figure, likely inspired by traditional Javanese shadow puppet theatre (Wayang Kulit) or Balinese Hindu epics. The piece is created using the traditional batik technique, where wax-resist dyeing is applied by hand to cloth. The result is a highly detailed and rhythmic composition, rich in line and pattern. This work is set behind glass in its original ebonised wooden frame with gilt slip, and was originally retailed by The Rowley Gallery, Kensington, a known London gallery specialising in fine art and framing. Details Artist: Suhirdiman (signed and dated 1976) Origin: Indonesia Medium: Batik on cloth Technique: Wax-resist dyeing Framing: Ebonised wood frame with gilt border, glazed Provenance: The Rowley Gallery, Kensington, London Dimensions (framed): 95 cm high × 84 cm wide (37 1/2 × 33 in) Condition: Good overall condition with a few age-related spots. Frame sound and presentable with some light wear. Ready to hang. About the Artist & Technique Suhirdiman was active during the mid-late 20th century, contributing to a revival of Indonesian batik as fine art. The batik method, originating on Java, uses either a canting (spouted pen) or cap (metal stamp) to apply wax, before successive rounds of dyeing create intricate patterns.
