About the Item

This group of four works by Joan Miro was created as a larger series for the publication of Vol. One & Vol Two in a group of original works setting out his then current material. The works were published by Michel Leiris & Fernand Mourlot in 1972. This set appears in the Miro Catalog raisonne which was published by Meight and done in Paris. Miro a Spanish born Catalonia artist has an international reputation in the art field and is most often associated with the Surrealist and Dada moments. Born in 1893 just in time to be influenced by the rapid changes in the modern world. He was educated at Escuela de Bellas Artes de la Llatja , He had his first one man show in Barcelona in 1918 . Shortly afterwards he moved to Paris and used the time to complete works begun in Spain but with a decided move towards a more personal style. By 1924 Miro joined the surrealists movement headed by Andre Breton. This intense period in his life was devoted to the further refinement of his work creating a less chaotic more formal style. These works would later be called his dream paintings and would firmly place Miro as one of the most important modern painters By 1931 Pierre Matisse opened a new gallery in New York City and began representing Miro in this country. Matisse' s almost constant promotion and representation of Miro' s work resulted in his art being a major influence in the american modern art movement. He received the grand price at the Venice Biennial in 1954 then was awarded the Guggenheim International award in 1958. In 1959 Andre Breton asked Miro to represent Spain along with Dali and others in the up coming Homage to Surrealism show. In 1974 Miro completed a very large tapestry for the World Trade Center in New York City. This work was the most valuable work destroyed in the September 11 attack. In 1977 he finished another tapestry to be exhibited at the National Gallery in Washington DC. By the 1980 Miro began to slow down his production and he received an honorary doctorate from the University of Barcelona. Miro died in 1983. Miro collectively did 1100 lithographic series consisting of multiply works all published and undertaken by Mourlot .With so large a production it is sometimes hard to determine correct margins and production dates. We have done considerable research on these works and found them at many price levels framed and unframed on numerous web sites and have determined that pricing ours at a fair lower end figure based on the purchase price and the framing costs. The works represented here are pencil signed .Newly framed by us all to hang in a group in like mattes and frames. We believe them to be actual limited edition Miro lithographs but feel uncertain as to the signatures being done by Miro' s hand since we are not art experts but run a decorative arts gallery. One of the works had a certification of Authenticity attached to it dated 1988 and was framed while the others were not framed when we purchased them. We there for are selling these works as decorative pieces and not as fine investment art. These works are being sold as a group and not individually

Andre Derain was born in Chatou France in 1880. He met Matisse early in his life but was conscripted into the French army in 1901.
