About the Item

The set of two early 19th century sepia mezzotint engravings of works by Claude Lorrain (1600-1682). Beautifully matted in a rich maroon/brown fabric and framed in gold, the scenes are of the Italian countryside and engraved by Richard Earlom (1742-1822). Plate 48 is from the original drawing in the collection of Earl Spencer, plate 25 is from the original drawing in the collection of R.P. Knight. Sold as a set of 2 Claude Lorrain, also known as Claude Gellee, was a French artist who spent most of his life living in Italy during the Romantic period of art. He was a leading artist in the Italian school of landscape painting. Lorrain often attributed his inspirations to classical concepts of Rome's countryside.
