About the Item

Extremely rare, perhaps unique, this 1920s print of Orpheus charming the animals with his lyre and song was made by David Osborne Hamilton, the esteemed poet and businessman. Orpheus is surrounded by a menagerie of animals that would normally be at odds, including bear, leopard, deer and rabbits, all playful and docile amidst the sweet sounds produced by the "god of music." Hamilton was a remarkable talent, having edited the Yale Literary Magazine in his youth, published a number of his own poems, and managed an industrial concern in Detroit. He clearly dabbled in art as his time allowed, but this etching is the only example of his output that we could find. Interestingly, this print was sold by the John Wanamaker department store in Philadelphia, which once had an art gallery among its many offerings. Dimensions include matte and frame; visible print is 7.5 inches high by 9.5 inches wide.

"Orpheus and His Companions, " Surrealist Masterpiece with Male Nudes
Located in Philadelphia, PA
This masterful and extraordinary painting, filled with ghostly nudes in various poses in a dark interior, with Orpheus playing the lyre in the garden outside lit in an otherworldly golden light was clearly created by Pavel Tchelitchew, Eugene Berman or another Mid-Century master of Surrealism. Full of symbolism and allegory, the interior features sheep and nude figures who are in deep sleep or some kind of euphoric stupor. Some figures are painted in a silvery white, as if lit by the moon, and others are suffused in a golden lifelike...

Orpheus - Drawing By Gustave Bourgogne - 1940s
By Gustave Bourgogne
Located in Roma, IT
Orpheus is an artwork realized by Gustave Bourgogne in the 1940s.  Pencil and watercolor, ink on paper.  Good conditions. Gustave Bourgogne (1888-1968), a french painter born in 1888 in Veigné in Indre et Loire and died in Paris in 1968. He excelled in landscapes, still lifes and portraits and specialized in the abstract interpretation of great musical compositions. In 1928, hearing the great carillon of the cathedral of Mechelen, he had the revelation of the correspondence of sounds and colors and began to reproduce in his paintings the impressions felt while listening to music, considering that painting is like music, the result of the same deep rhythm. In the company of Henri Valensi, Charles Blanc-Gatti and Vito Stracquadaini, Gustave Bourgogne published the Musicalism Manifesto in 1932 and created with them the Association of Musical Artists. He exhibited his works at the first three salons of musical artists (which were held at the Renaissance Gallery) which were joined by, among others, Louise...
