All of us create our own legends." -Mayumi Oda From the large prints Goddess Series by this acclaimed printmaker (sometimes called the Matisse of Japan). On hand made Japanese Mulberry paper with raw deckled edges. It measures 35 1/2 x 24 inches and is in 40 3/4 x 29-inch frame with UV protectant Plexiglass. Printed in 1978 in an edition of 60. Available on the artist's website but rare on the secondary market. Titled, edition information and signature along the lower edge. Marked in pencil on verso, upper left, Mayumi Oda b. 1941 Tokyo and original purchase price. In good condition. The surface shows signs of wear from having been stored rolled at some point in the past (Creases, minor indentations, rippling). Current framing is recent. Biography: Oda Mayumi was born in 1941 to a Buddhist family in Tokyo. She graduated from Tokyo University of Fine Arts in 1966. The following two years she studied at Pratt Graphic Center in New York. She had her first one-woman show in 1969 at Harvard University. Since then the artist has exhibited worldwide - mostly in the USA and in Japan. Oda Mayumi is one of many fine Japanese artists who took her permanent residence in the USA, currently, she lives in Hawaii. Oda Mayumi is strongly interested and involved in environmental and in peace issues. She has played an active role in the protest against atomic tests and atomic energy. Oda Mayumi is an exceptional Japanese female artist. She has enriched the world of Japanese prints with images of voluptuous female nudes drawn with large breasts, hips, and thighs. The unusual images have found a positive resonance from art collectors and art critics. Her works are infamous museums like the Moma (Museum of Modern Art) in New York.
