About the Item

Set of three original antique fish prints. Smooth hammerhead shark, Sphyrna zygaena 15, head of hammerhead 16, White shark, Carcharodon carcharias 17. Spiny dogfish, Squalus acanthias 12, blue shark, Prionace glauca 13 and angel shark, Squatina squatina 14. Largetooth sawfish, Pristis pristis 18, young sawfish 19, angular rough shark, Oxynotus centrina 20, small spotted catshark, Scyliorhinus canicula 21, and young dogfish 22-24. These prints originate from 'Unterhaltungen aus der Naturgeschichte: Der Fische erster Theil, Volume 5' by Gottlieb Tobias Wilhelm. Published 1832. Gottlieb Tobias Wilhelm (1758 – 1811) was a Protestant pastor and natural history writer, and the son of Christian Art Wilhelm, an art dealer and publisher in Augsburg, Bavaria, Germany. These engravings are from the fish section of Wilhelm’s monumental 25 volume work on Natural History. Published from 1777 through to the 1800s, with a total of 1469 exquisite illustrations by the renowned engravers of Augsburg’s famous print empire, once known as the European Image Factory.
