Pair of 18th c Belgian Mounted Tapestry Fragments with Putti or Angels

About the Item

Pair of Brussels tapestry fragments finely woven of silk and wool featuring angels or putti carrying a basket of flowers above their heads. Opposing angels, one with a gold draped cloth the other with a red cloth. Probably Belgium in origin, circa 1725, with nice bright rich colors. The 18th century saw the increased competition of the French workshops, both royal and private. Weavers like Le Clerc, Leyniers, van den Hecke and de Vos maintained quality, but the last of the traditional Brussels tapestry ateliers closed at the time of the French Revolution, by which time tapestry was finally becoming less popular; Goya's designs for the royal factory in Spain were perhaps the last major works in the medium. The fragments are mounted on wooden padded board covered in acid free muslin, life size. Very good overall condition, with old repairs, minor losses, imperfections, and wear commensurate with age and use. Dimensions: 69 in H x 22 in W x 3 in D. Ref: 13371
