About the Item

This hand carved giltwood shelf / wall bracket or architectural corbel clearly displays the strength, drama and beauty of Spanish Baroque style. The central design motif is that of double scrolled acanthus leaves, with a row of "beading" at center. Viewing the bracket from certain angles, one senses hints of an anthropomorphic animal head presenting itself in the vegetal detailing. At close inspection, the wood shows the tool marks of skilled hand-carving, and multi-layers of gilt paint are visible. This giltwork would have been applied by a "pintor estofador y dorador" (or decorative painter and gilder) whose speciality was a specific subdivision within the guild of painters. Most probably dating from the late 17th to 18th century, this muscular little shelf could have begun as an architectural corbel, supporting a larger ledge or shelf in a sumptuously decorated interior space, or built as an individual support for the display of a sculpture. It is ready to attach to the wall via two handwrought iron fixtures on the back, and it is stabile and will support a fair amount of weight. This is a functional piece of Spain's past, that carries with it hundreds of years of history and craft.
