About the Item

A boldly sculpted wooden escutcheon, gessoed, water-gilded and polychromed, dating to the 19th century. The shaped cartouche frames an oval armorial reserve painted a saturated cobalt blue (azure). Centered is a broad V-shaped chevron in gold leaf, accompanied by three stylised roses, two in chief and one in base, finely shaded in dark outline. The surround is worked with theatrical scrolls and curled volutes, including a small central step-bracket below and ribbon-like side projections that enhance the sense of movement. The dry, matte glow of the gold, together with the lapidary blue ground, makes a striking neoclassical/baroque revival statement typical of continental decorative arts of the period. Condition: honest wear and small restorations consistent with age and use. There are scattered edge chips and rubbing to the gilding; old hairlines and consolidation to the scroll terminals; minor filled losses along the inner rim of the oval (small infill patches visible); retouched gilding on several high points; and light surface scuffs to the blue field from handling. A stable, old crack with discreet filler runs near the lower scroll. The reverse shows the original gesso/bolus and untouched workshop surfaces, with a warm patina. Presents beautifully and is ready to hang. Heraldry: the device reads “Azure, a chevron Or between three roses Or.” This blazon is not unique and appears in several European armorial traditions. In Italy, it is notably recorded for the Bembo (Venetian/Padovan) family—often exactly as “d’azzurro allo scaglione (chevron) d’oro, accompagnato da tre rose d’oro” (some sources give red roses as a variant). In France, the same coat (or very close variants) is attested for the de Lapisse family, and for Paul de Renneville (Normandy). A northern French line, de Bus (Pas-de-Calais), also bore “d’azur au chevron d’or accompagné de trois roses d’or,” sometimes specified as seeded of the field. Because this motif was used by multiple houses, a firm attribution normally depends on provenance or accompanying crests/supporters. Absent that, the arms most comfortably align with the Italian Bembo or one of the French families cited above. For reference to the generic blazon, see the standard rendering “Azure a chevron between three roses Or.”
