About the Item

large French trophy panel, glorifying the attributes of agriculture, that was hand-carved in bas relief during the 1900’s. Trophy plaques became popular in the period of Louis XVI, as Neoclassical themes prevailed, often depicting elements associated with military, music, hunting, or farming (or sometimes a combination of these). The panel has agricultural motifs with a woven basket adorned with flowers in the center. The basket is askew and laden with fruit such as pears, grapes, and pomegranates. Behind the basket is an assortment of farming tools, including a scythe and a grain flail. The blade of the scythe runs through the knot of a crinkled ribbon (a typical Louis XVI motif) that runs behind the basket down to the bottom of the panel. Near the terminal end of the ribbon is a bundle of wheat, a sickle, and a floral margent. There is a second margent near the top of the crinkled ribbon, beside some oak leaves and acorns. The panel is signed in the lower right corner by the woodworker, “L Sarrauel”. Our Louis XVI style carved oak panel would make a beautiful wall mounted piece of decorative art for any bedroom, bathroom, or living room.
