About the Item
A pair of elliptical reliefs dating to circa 1850, these French plaques depict various stages in the life of St. Louis. The metallic reliefs, which are signed “Justin” in the lower left, are wonderful three-dimensional renderings surrounded by gold matte with a deep cavetto and encased within wood and glass frames with deep undercut moldings.
One scene represents the arrival of Louis IX, King of France (later canonized as St Louis), at the royal chapel known as Sainte-Chapelle. Commissioned by Louis in the mid-1200s, the Gothic shrine was a major addition to the Medieval Palais de la Cité, which was (at the time) the residence of the Kings of France. The other plaque shows Louis leading an army against the Saracens in Egypt, known as the Seventh Crusade. Both scenes are loaded with details, even in the backgrounds, which are in lower relief than the foregrounds.
Justin Mathieu was a French sculptor born in 1796. He is known for his historical reliefs, many of which he exhibited in Paris Salons from 1846-1864. This particular pair detailing the life of St Louis was produced during Mathieu’s halcyon days and can be hung on any wall of the house.

Pair of 19th Century Nature Morte Hunt Trophy Paintings
Located in Dallas, TX
Nature morte (French for “still life”) paintings first became popular in the Netherlands in the 16th century. Assemblies of flowers, fruit, and dead game were the main subject matters, and hundreds of artists from Western Europe would eventually participate in the genre. French artists such as Jean-Baptiste Oudry painted some exquisite scenes, depictions of hunt motifs including game and dogs. These subjects remained highly popular and were used in hunt lodges throughout France. The pair of paintings seen here are very well done 19th century examples of such hunt scenes, each one measuring over 57 inches wide.
Both of our paintings depict hunting trophies displayed on an outdoor veranda. The balcony is elaborately styled with cavetto molding, volute scrolls, and a shaped cartouche beneath a bulbous gadrooned finial. Both paintings contain half of the cartouche and most of the finial, as if they were a continuous panoramic scene, complete with a blue sky and large trees in the background
The left painting features three felled birds piled on top of a deer carcass, with fruit scattered around them. Beneath the trophies is a coiled horn with a red tassel tied to it. A similar scene can be found on the right painting, with three birds displayed on the edge of the balcony. The birds lie on top of a pale green fabric with tassels that has been loosely folded. Under the textile is a hunting rifle and another horn. A garland of fruit is draped across the rifle’s stock, rising onto the balcony.
A beige fabric matte board and molded giltwood frame surround this pair of 19th century nature morte hunt trophy...

Pair of Louis XIII Ebony Carved Tondos
Located in Kittery Point, ME
Each ebony tondo carved with Roman military scenes in low relief, set in gilt Florentine style frames. Formerly part of the front doors of a cabinet. With an old label at the back of the frame, Ernest Samson, Paris.
13 1/4in. diameter sight (the dimensions otherwise indicated include the frame).
These beautifully carved panels would have been part of the doors of a cabinet made to impress in a grand room in an aristocratic or royal setting. They reflect the changing taste in the first half of the 17th century for large sumptuous pieces for grand galleries and grand state apartments in royal and courtly interiors. It was not until the 17th century that France began to import exotic timbers from the Far East and South America and ebony was one of the first of these woods to be employed in cabinet-making. However, due to its rarity and cost it was almost exclusively used for veneering. French cabinetmakers who worked with ebony became known as menuisiers en ébène and later ébénistes. The carved and engraved ornament and ripple mouldings reflect the light on the glossy ebony surface.
The subject-matter of these bas-relief carvings was inspired by prints with religious, mythological or literary subjects and naturalistic engraved motifs. According to Alcouffe 'These cabinets represent the synthesis of foreign (especially German) influences and traditions expressed in French Renaissance furniture...
