Louis XIV Wall-mounted Sculptures

LOUIS XIV STYLE

As opposed to the styles that would follow from the other 18th-century French kings, Louis XV and Louis XVI, antique Louis XIV furniture is rigid and imposing. It expresses opulence — even its armchairs, with their upright backs, straight legs and lavish ornamentation, look like thrones. Authentic Louis XIV sofas, a then newly emerging iteration of seating, are fully upholstered and often feature decoratively carved frames of walnut, chestnut or oak.

When French King Louis XIV established his royal court at Versailles in 1682, he transformed what was once a hunting lodge into a palace that declared his wealth and power through its design. Until his death in 1715, he reigned with a spirit of excess and absolute political dominance. The “Sun King,” as he called himself, believed that France revolved around him as planets do the sun. Louis XIV adopted the sun as his emblem, decorating the grounds with symbols of the sun and Apollo, the Greek god of the sun. As he stated, “There is nothing that indicates more clearly the magnificence of great princes than their superb palaces and their precious furniture.” He was a child when he became king in 1643, only shaping his style after he became absolute monarch in 1661.

Reflecting trends in French Baroque art, Louis XIV furniture characteristics included exuberant decoration. There were gilded bronze details including shells, suns, grotesques, lions and classical references like acanthus leaves. The years of growth in the country’s manufacturing, such as the tapestries and cabinets made at Gobelins, led to design innovations. The commode replaced the chest as a storage device, with drawers and a surface that could double as a desk.

The materials were luxurious, such as the popular tortoiseshell veneer technique that leading cabinetmaker Pierre Golle used in his designs. André-Charles Boulle, who became royal cabinetmaker in 1672, was a masterful artist of marquetry, using inlays of ebony, exotic woods and mother-of-pearl.

18th Century Parisian Giltwood Barometer Thermometer
Located in Dallas, TX
This lovely giltwood barometer and thermometer was hand-carved during the Louis XVI period in Paris, France. During the late 1700’s, barometers were typically only owned by wealthy families. Over time, barometers began to be viewed as works of art and could be found in middle class homes throughout Europe. The highly detailed crown of our apparatus depicts a footed vase bursting with a floral display. The garland trails down in an arch shape until it reaches an angular platform adorned with molding and vertical fluting. The flowered swag continues behind the platform, transitioning into a pair of gadrooned leaves. Each gadrooned leaf terminates in a husked cornucopia overflowing with laurel leaves. A large circular barometer dial is positioned in between the cornucopias. Under the barometer is a looping lambrequin that borders the top half of the thermometer. A pair of gadrooned leaves runs behind and through the lambrequin, flanking the lower half of the thermometer. A fluted base beneath the thermometer sits in a gadrooned cup. The detail of the carvings on this late 18th century Parisian...

Carved Antique American Double Picture Frame Depicting US Navy Crest
Located in Dallas, TX
Hand-carved in the United States in the early 20th century, the focal point of this double picture frame is the stylized naval insignia. Both glass frames, which fit 6 x 4 photos, currently contain a pair of near antique black and white postcards (they are included). The frame on the left has a print of a circa 1930 George Harris photograph of the USS Constitution, aka “Old Ironsides”. The frame on the right has a lithograph of a full rigged windjammer (commercial sailing boat) that was originally printed in the early 1900’s. The two frames are positioned splayed outward so that the bottom of the frames meet in one point. Both frames are adorned with leaves and rectangular borders with diapered background. The outside bottom corners are each conical volute scrolls with fluted embellishments. At the top of the frames, a large eagle is presented displayed, wings elevated (wings spread wide with the tips pointing upward). The eagle is perched upon a shaped shield with stars and stripes, in the style of an early American flag...

The inner core of the clock is ebony. The outside of the clock is inlaid with extremely delicate and skillful gilt bronze in the motifs. Ormolu combined with ebony will make the clock shine in the middle of the room. This cartel clock makes a strong visual impression because the two colors of gold and black blend together to enhance the typical beauty of the luxurious Boulle style. These are also prominent colors that are often loved by Boulle – the master of marquetry. If you want to own a bracket clock inspired by the symmetrical style of the Louis XIV period, don't miss this sophisticated product. Atop the clock is an image of Pheme - a messenger sent by Zeus with free wings and a trumpet. Pheme is an image that symbolizes fame. The bottom of the clock shows the meticulousness in the creative thinking of the artisan by arranging the floral motifs smartly. Through the technique of marquetry as well as thanks to the skillful hands and creativity of artisan Noel Mornanh Paris, this wall clock brings unexpected majesty and regalness. An antique clock is bordered around the front face with a flower and acanthus leaf motif. The four lower corners of the clock depict the natural beauty of a woman. In the center of the clock, the image of a woman wearing a laurel wreath represents victory and glory. At the top is a sitting man representing the throne to rule the country. The inside of the clock dial is printed with very unique Roman numerals. In addition, its movement has also been overhauled to both function well and bring out the unique aesthetic and lavish beauty of this antique French cartel clock...

Grand and Historical French Cast Iron Coat of Arms Fireback, circa 1650
Located in Dallas, TX
This extraordinary cast iron fireback from France is close to 38 inches tall, and it is unique in that it has historical significance. It bears the royal coat of arms of the house of La Tour d’Auvergne, and was cast around the year 1650. This heraldry belongs to the cadet branch of the family. Its cadet branch, extinct in 1802, ruled the duchy of Bouillon in the Southern Netherlands from 1594, and held the dukedoms of Albret and Château-Thierry in the peerage of France since 1660. The oldest known firebacks date to around 1460, but very few have survived. These impressive cast iron works of art were placed inside the chimney, against the back wall. They served to not only prevent heat from escaping into the wall, but more importantly, to reflect the heat back into the room. The stone walls inside a Chateau were cold and damp, so firebacks soon became very popular in the large properties of France. These heraldic firebacks served an important symbolic reminder of the strength of the family, and were placed inside the heart of the chimney, within the most important room of the Chateau: “La Grande Salle”. The central cartouche that contains the coat of arms is surrounded by two inverted cornucopias decorated with the royal Fleur de Lys. On the opposite side of each of these is a fantastic large rampant griffin...
