This Bulgari Vintage Burmese Ceylon Sapphire Diamond Cuff Bracelet, made in Italy in the 20th century, circa 1980s, is richly elegant, crafted in 18K yellow gold with tantalizingly voluminous modular forms paved in round brilliant-cut diamonds. The gross weight of gold is approximately 116.50 grams. The bracelet is signed Bvlgari with an Italian maker’s mark and features 5 graduated cushion-shape sapphires weighing a total of 30 carats. The sapphires are each accompanied by individual reports from the Swiss Gemological Institute (SSEF) stating that three natural corundum blue sapphires which weigh an estimated 8.55ct, 6.57ct, and 6.23ct are of Ceylon (Sri Lanka) origin, and two which weigh an estimated 4.39ct and 4.26ct are of Burmese (Myanmar) origin. All five sapphires are evaluated as “blue of medium strong saturation” with no indication of thermal treatment. Unheated Ceylon and Burmese sapphires with such magnificent coloration as these are quite splendid, as the majority of colored gemstones on the market have been heat-treated to improve color saturation and clarity. Burmese sapphires are among the rarest and most valuable types of sapphires, owing to their rich, intense royal blue color. Ceylon sapphires typically have a slightly lighter cornflower blue, yet the stones have been matched in this bracelet to perfection. The velvety rich cushion sapphires have softened curved corners like a pillow and are each set with four curving yellow gold prongs which emanate out of triangular forms above and below. Trapezoid and triangle shape diamonds have been custom cut to fit perfectly within the channel. These modular segments are echoed and flanked by trapezoid and triangle shape sapphire, bordered with yellow gold, and surrounded by polished gold links pavé-set with brilliant-cut diamonds. The total weight of diamonds for the bracelet is an estimated 18.00 carats of G-H color and VS clarity. Jewelry in the 1980s tended to be bigger and bolder, and that included a dazzling display of gold and diamonds. The pleasingly rounded bombé style lobes which run the length of the bracelet offer more surface area for embellishment. The opulence of the surfaces and the rich offering of sapphire make this special piece a fine example of the Bulgari signature style which crystalized in this decade.
