About the Item

This knockout bracelet is Eytan Brandes' latest labor of love -- demonstrating why so many of our customers come to him to convert their antique and vintage pieces into wearable one-of-a-kind new heirlooms. This bracelet originally featured a gold frame between the two front columns. The frame held a large shell cameo portrait of a man, but a seriously unattractive man -- like the mid-19th Century equivalent of the most unpleasant clerk at the DMV. The cuff has a specific type of French "weevil" import mark indicating it's 18K gold and dating the piece between 1838 and 1864, but no maker's mark and no indication of where it was imported FROM. We weren't really sure what to do with the bracelet because the wire scrollwork and the columns and the gold color are all quite beautiful, but that cameo made it completely unwearable for anyone but the guy's mom, and she's not around anymore. Fast forward about a year and Eytan buys the jewelry estate of a customer who purchased a lot of gold jewelry in the Middle East in the 1960's and 1970's. In this parcel was a large and ornate 14 karat gold oval Israeli pin with a cracked citrine. This pin has a "mem" stamp, which was used in Israel to mark imported gold jewelry from the 1950's through the 1970's. (Again, no maker's mark so we don't know where the pin was imported FROM.) Combining the two pieces -- created approximately 100 years apart yet complementing each other beautifully -- was a matter of carefully soldering four points of the pin (relieved of its pin hardware) to the columns, but Eytan also wanted a nicer stone, so he replaced the citrine with a custom-cut ruby. The ruby is cut from low-grade material -- it's completely opaque -- but we liked the rich color and our gemcutter did a great job with the faceting to bring out the stone's shimmery sheen. The clasp works fine, but like most hinged cuffs, you always want a back-up, so Eytan added a safety chain with an age-appropriate box link. The original "horse's hoof" leather bracelet box (shown in some of the photos) is included. It's in a state of major disrepair but still an interesting storage object. WEIGHTS & MEASUREMENTS > Bracelet height (front column): 51mm (2 inches) > Bracelet height (at center back): 18mm (0.7 inches) > Ruby: 9 carats (13.8mm x 10.1mm x 4.3mm) > Total bracelet weight: 44 grams > Inside circumference : 6.5" (this bracelet will not fit if your wrist is larger than 6.5") An appraisal is included with your purchase for insurance purposes.

Additions or alterations made to the original: This is a conversion of a cuff bracelet (centerpiece replaced) and a pin (used as a centerpiece). Eytan also replaced center gemstone and added a safety chain. Polished. Cuff is over 100 years old and center is around 70 years old, but both have been thoroughly cleaned & polished. Clasp works fine & we've added safety chain - a segment of vintage (circa 1960) box chain. The original box is a mess, as shown in photos.

"Skinny Twist" Stacker Set: Rhodolite Solitaire w Diamonds + Two 18K Gold Bands
By Eytan Brandes
Located in Sherman Oaks, CA
Story time! Eytan Brandes was asked to make an engagement ring with a bulgy band and a setting for a nice two carat diamond. When the ring came back from the caster, the band was about half as thick as the band he'd designed. This kind of thing happens occasionally; usually the undersized, or oversized, or upside-down, or backwards, or misspelled, or otherwise misbegotten bauble just goes into the melting pot and we all move on. In this case, however, Eytan liked the ring's frankly unbalanced look -- its giant center basket hovering over the whisper-thin band. It doesn't work as an engagement ring, but it makes for a cool solitaire. He therefore set the band with ten itty-bitty diamonds and, for the center, he set a delicious, richly hued rhodolite garnet. The diamonds are natural (earth-mined), untreated little brightlings -- G-H color and VS1-2 clarity. They're full-cut and set in little raised pits spaced evenly across the front half of the ring; discreet prongs hold the stones in place. The stone basket in the center of the ring is cleverly formed by the four triple prongs that reach up from the bottom of the basket to grab the four corners of the center stone -- a gorgeous rhodolite garnet in deep red with chocolatey undertones and flashes of pink. It's nicely cut with a huge table and a modified Swiss-cut pavilion. We like the way the ring looks on its own, but we also like it beefed up a bit, so we're including two twisty bands that stack nicely with the garnet -- giving the wearer either option. Eytan made these bands ages ago; they were just sitting in the safe until The Boss realized they'd make a great set with his garnet ring. And they lived happily ever after! Measurements & Details: Size: Currently a size 5.5, we will resize all three rings at no charge for full-price buyers. Resizing is otherwise negotiable. Gold: The garnet ring is 14 karat gold. The twisty bands are 18 karat...

"Marquee" Ring with Raw Ruby Cabochon Between Rows of Faceted Rubies in 18K Gold
By Eytan Brandes
Located in Sherman Oaks, CA
This delicious ring by Eytan Brandes was actually completed back in 2019, but it was originally set with an opaque green stone. We liked the way it looked, but the stone was problematic since we weren't sure if it was green agate, jadeite or nephrite and once it was set, we couldn't test it (oops). After a lot of backy forthy, Eytan decided it was too weird to be listing a ring with an unidentified "green stone," so he popped it out* and decided it would be fun to contrast the top quality, sparkling pink rubies with their cousin from the wrong side of the tracks: a rough ruby. This kind of ruby is completely natural and completely loaded with every flaw under the sun: silk, uneven color, spider veins, milky streaks, fissures, fractures, you name it. We love rough rubies (and rough sapphires too). Yes, they can be hard to cut (our gemcutter does NOT love them) because you have to find enough material that isn't threatened by internal fractures, but once they're successfully cut into cabochons, they polish up beautifully and, like all rubies, they are reliably durable. Even though they're effectively opaque (because they're so chock full o'flaws), they have a lustrous depth and character that you just won't find with either naturally opaque OR transparent stones. So, having said all that, we reintroduce the Marquee Ring...
