About the Item

A Tassie is a paste or glass copy of a cameo or intaglio. Scottish gem engraver James Tassie created replicas of ancient agates and gemstones and together with Dr. Quin of Dublin, they came up with an opaque glass that could replicate various colors and patterns. Tassies were created using a molding process rather than carving. The opposite of a cameo, an intaglio is created by carving below the surface of a stone. Intaglios were often present in antique fobs and signet rings, used for the purpose of sealing the wax of a letter or note. An outstanding glass Tassie and agate intaglio link bracelet from the Early Victorian (ca1850s) era! This wonderful piece is made of 14kt gold, and is comprised of 17 colorful links that form an incredible 2-strand bracelet. The design features a combination of two types of links, the majority of which are glass tassies. The three remaining links are intaglios carved from banded agate stone. Each link is completely unique, bearing a highly detailed image at the center. The artistic motifs appear to revolve around ancient Roman or Greek history and mythology. Surrounding each link is a smooth bezel with an open-backed setting, allowing the light to pass through each tassie. The links vary in size, shape and color, including vivid shades of green, purple, yellow, blue and red. Fine strands of gold chain connect each link together, forming two rows. The bracelet fastens together with a push clasp, which is disguised within the large central link. A safety latch at the side provides additional security when worn. Accompanying the bracelet is the original custom box (as pictured). A truly incredible work of art, this magnificent bracelet looks spectacular in person, and would make a magnificent addition to any antique jewelry collection! The bracelet measures approximately 7" long, and would fit nicely on a medium/average sized wrist. The largest tassie link at the center measures 1" tall and 3/4" wide. The smallest link measures approximately 1/2" tall and 3/8" wide. The bracelet is in excellent antique condition. There is some normal surface wear to the handmade gold setting, which is commensurate with age. A few of the bezels are worn around the surface edges, but remain secure and presentable in appearance. There are some solder marks on the interior of the piece, which is not visible when the bracelet is worn. All of the tassies and intaglios are intact, original to the piece, and securely set. The push clasp and safety latch fasten securely and are in good working condition. One of the yellow glass tassies has some surface abrasions and a cracked/chipped area on the back; however, it does not detract from the beauty of the piece, and is not noticeable when worn. The box has normal signs of wear, but remains in good antique condition.
