About the Item
Period: 1860 ca.
Provenance: Rome Italy
Lenght: 18 cm x 34 cm
Weight: 48,66 gr
The bracelet dates to 1860 circa and is made up of six micromosaics set in 18-carat gold, depicting the monuments of Ancient Rome. The bracelet is in excellent conservative conditions and is an example of the artistic technique that was born around the last quarter of the 18th century, when the ancient tradition of mosaic – which developed starting from the Byzantine Romanesque age but fell into disuse with Humanism and the Renaissance – returned to life in minute artefacts, made up of small format tiles. The depiction of the most important Roman monuments spread thanks to the birth of the Grand Tour phenomenon, during which rich European men and women visited Italy to complete their classical education and purchased this type of work of art as a souvenir of the journey.

Gold and Micromosaic Bracelet, circa 1860-1870
Located in Paris, FR
Gold bracelet composed of two rigid, articulated elements that form a circle. The bracelet is decorated with a central medallion featuring a micromosaic. The medallion is ringed with cannetille motifs and lines of gold that form arabesques. The quality of metalwork is reminiscent of Etruscan craftsmanship.
The central medallion represents a pastoral scene with two peasants next to a fountain. The man is milking a goat while the woman is refreshing herself at the fountain. Roman ruins stand in the background. This composition was inspired by Francesco Londonio, a Milanese artist. The engravings of his paintings strongly influenced mosaic artisans during the second half of the 19th century.
This piece presents several similarities with others from the Castellani jewelry...

The landscape of the bracelet portrays the Chillon chateau in Switzerland, made famous during the Romantic period with Lord Byron’s poem written in 1816, The Prisoner of Chillon.
