About the Item
Rare David Spada New York Modernist Space Age Link Bracelet
A bold and historically significant piece of wearable art, this rare link bracelet by visionary designer David Spada captures the spirit of the 1980s Space Age design with unmistakable flair. Crafted in New York, the bracelet features a striking composition of matte black rubber links interspersed with vibrant, multicolor anodized aluminum spacer rings—a dynamic tribute to the rainbow spectrum of the LGBTQ+ community.
Though not signed, the bold design is a definitive Spada creation, instantly recognizable to collectors familiar with his avant-garde aesthetic and pioneering use of industrial materials in jewelry.
Dimensions: Inside diameter: 2.50 in (6.4 cm); width: 1.07 in (2.7 cm); inner circumference: 7.91 in (20.10 cm). The flexible rubber comfortably accommodates medium wrists (7–8 in / 18–19 cm).
Design Legacy and Cultural Impact
David Spada (1961–1996) was a trailblazing jewelry designer whose work helped define the visual language of queer identity and postmodern fashion in the 1980s and 1990s. A graduate of Parsons School of Design, Spada gained early acclaim when The New York Times spotlighted his rubber tubing jewelry in 1984. His signature use of anodized aluminum—seen in rings, earrings, and even swimwear—pushed the boundaries of material and form.
Spada's boutique, Casa di Spada, became a hub for experimental design in New York's Lower East Side. In 1991, he introduced the now-iconic Freedom Rings at San Francisco's Freedom Day Parade. These rainbow-colored aluminum rings quickly became a national symbol of LGBTQ+ pride, representing joy, diversity, and resilience. As Spada himself said, "The colors symbolize happiness and represent the diversity of the community."
His work remains highly sought after by collectors of 20th-century design and queer cultural artifacts. Spada's legacy endures as a vibrant voice in the history of American jewelry design.
