About the Item
This playful modernist David Spada New York bangle bracelet features a stunning Space Age design from the 1980s. The rare bangle features a spiral design with neon orange anodized aluminum, accented with black rubber elements, green and purple coiled aluminum parts, and finished with multicolored acrylic beads. There is no visible signature, but the iconic design is an unmistakable brand signature.
Dimensions: The inside diameter is 2.75 in (7 cm), the width is 1.69 in (4.2 cm), and the inner circumference is 8.65 in (21.98 cm). The metal bracelet is slightly flexible. The bracelet is best suited for a large wrist of 7.5 to 8.5 in circumference (19.5 to 21.5 cm).
Reference: David Spada (December 5, 1961 - May 13, 1996) was a jewelry designer in New York City in the 1980s and 1990s and the creator and marketer of Freedom Rings
Spada attended the Parsons School of Design in the early 1980s, graduating around 1982.
He began making jewelry as a student, and his work gained recognition as early as 1984, when The New York Times featured a piece crafted from orange rubber tubing.
Spada became known for his work with colored anodized aluminum, creating a wide range of shapes from the material, including rings, earrings, clothing, and swimwear adorned with aluminum decorations. He eventually opened a boutique, Casa di Spada, in New York's Lower East Side, which sold his jewelry designs, clothing, and custom items.
According to a 1992 New York Times article, freedom rings were introduced in 1991 in San Francisco as a fundraising item at the gay and lesbian community's annual Pride Parade and quickly became a national trend. The colored aluminum rings, inspired by the colors of the rainbow and the gay pride flag, have evolved as a symbol of Gay Pride. Spada used to say, " The colors symbolize happiness and represent the diversity of the community."
Spada died of AIDS complications on May 13, 1996.
