Antique Japanese Meiji Shakudo Gold And Silver Brooch

About the Item

This exquisite antique Japanese shakudo rectangular brooch is a fine example of Japanese mixed metalwork from the Meiji period (1868-1912). The brooch is crafted using a combination of metals including gold, silver and copper, materials used in a Meiji period known for exceptional craftsmanship and unique designs. The brooch is made using a shakudo technique. The central design features a scene with a pair of geisha sitting on the floor, one of them is feeding a quail (uzura), popular Japanese motif. The quail used to be kept as a fighting cock, and therefore it represents fighting spirit. There is also a cherry blossom (sakura) and a fan motif on the background. The outer frame of the brooch is silver. PERIOD: Meiji (1868-1912) MEASUREMENTS: approx 4.8cm length, weight: 26.5 grams CONDITION: Marks and wear due to age, discolouration
