Carrington & Co. Antique Ruby, Diamond and Pearl Crescent Brooch

About the Item

Created in the 1890s by Carrington & Co., Regent Street, London, this English crescent moon brooch is composed of rubies, diamonds and a pearl. The brooch is designed as a tapering circular crescent moon of graduating old mine-cut diamonds edged by cushion-shape rubies, centering a pearl and diamond star motif, crossed by a knife edge bar with ruby and diamond terminals. A favorite motif with eternal charm, this star and crescent brooch offers a celestial touch of vivid color and brilliance. Product Details: Item #: BO-21320 Artist: Carrington & Co., London Country: England Circa: 1890s Dimensions: 2.00" length, 1.00" width. Materials: 29 old mine-cut diamonds (approximate total weight 1.50 carats); 22 cushion shape rubies (approximate total weight 1.90 carats); 1 pearl; Silver-topped 18K Gold; With fitted, signed box Signed: Unsigned, numbered 604, 37524 Macklowe Gallery Curator's Notes: Carrington & Co., London, came to prominence as jewelers in the 1890s, winning royal warrants from the English and Russian royal families. The British royal family called on Carrington to set two of the diamonds cut by the Asscher family from the historic "Cullinan", the giant 3,106 carat type IIa discovered in the Premier Mine in South Africa. In its crystalline state, the Cullinan's three cleaved faces revealed that it had once been part of an even larger rough stone. The Cullinan III, a 94.4 carat pear or pendeloque shape, and IV, a 63.6 carat square cushion-cut, were cleverly mounted together in 1911 by Carrington as a platinum pendant brooch - the stones were separable and could be mounted into other royal jewels as well. The pendant brooch still exists in the original Carrington setting.

Macklowe Gallery Curator's Notes: Throughout the 19th century, British astronomers made many advances, building on the enormous base of precise observations provided to them by their predecessors in the 1700s. Using the new technique of spectroscopy, they worked to determine the composition of heavenly bodies, while breakthroughs in understanding the geology of the earth -many made by passionate amateur scientists as diverse as surveyors and Anglican clergy - helped them discover the facts about the nature of the moon and newly discovered planets. It was in fact an Anglican priest who first advanced his well-supported theory that the earth was indeed more than a billion years old. Astonishing early imaging of the moon, as well as the appearance of the Great Comets of 1843 and 1882 that remained for months burning in the sky above England, helped stoke popular fascination with heavenly bodies.
