About the Item

Egyptian Revival diamond and gem-set brooch in platinum. This geometric plaque brooch of an octagonal design is modelled as two hieroglyphic swallow birds decorated with calibre-cut rubies, sapphires, emeralds and onyx, further accented with ruby floral motifs within a pave-set diamond plaque with geometric and openwork Greek key accents. Diamonds: Old European brilliant-cut, Transitional round brilliant-cut and single-cut; approximately 2.6 carats in total. Later Lisbon import marks for 850 platinum. Dimensions: 5.8 x 2.7 cm. Gross weight: 16.86g. The exciting new archeological discoveries in the Valley of Kings in Egypt, which culminated with the opening of King Tutankhamun’s tomb in 1922, instituted a strong Egyptian trend in jewelry motifs of the Art Deco period. Pharaohs, lotus blossoms, pyramids, the eye of Horus, scarabs, swallows and even sphynxes were just a few examples of motifs present in Egyptian Revival jewelry from the 1920s and 1930s. This item is in good condition, with marks and scratches consistent with general age and wear. Antique, period and vintage pieces, both signed and unsigned, are being offered as worn.
