Robert Lee Morris Sterling Silver Motorcycle Brooch

About the Item

What a fun and dramatic piece this one is! Very large and important, a true statement of glamour and high fashion, this brooch is composed of two spirals that are joined by a sweeping curvilinear form, very dimensional and sculptural. Big scale was important in the late 1980's fashion, and this was created for a Donna Karan Fall collection whereby an entire family of organic and lively silver shapes accessorized the luxurious fall coats and jackets. Over 4.5 inches long, this is jewelry for the collector of high fashion who loves a bigger personal presentation to the world. Robert lee Morris influenced an entire generation of jewelry and accessory designers due to the incredible editorial coverage his jewelry received over a long period of time. Signed by the artist as seen in the primary photo, these pieces were also brand drivers for the Donna Karan image as well as that of the RLM company.

This bold and very sculptural brooch by robert Lee Morris is sterling silver, and is an actual dome that is nearly 3/4" high. there is a rimmed hole in the top center which makes this form completely mysterious and engaging. For the lover of wearing clusters or groupings of brooches on their coat. A very unusual piece, this three dimensional silver form is strikingly original and at the same time very clean and pure. Created in the late 1980's during a very active period of collaboration between Robert and Donna Karan who was asking for silver brooches to wear down the runway with her fall jackets. A William Spratling Sterling silver Brooch
By William Spratling
Located in Pasadena, CA
A William Spratling Sterling silver Brooch .1933-1939 and 1940-1946, First Design Period; Taxco, Mexico Each stamped for William Spratling; Others variously stamped: Taxco / 980 / Made in Mexico / Silver / Mexico Provenance: The Collection of Cindy Tietze-Hodosh and Stuart Hodosh William Spratling, (born Sept. 22, 1900, Sonyea, N.Y., U.S.A died Aug. 8, 1967, near Taxco, Mex.), American designer and architect, who spent more than 30 years in Mexico developing and promoting the silvercraft that made the city of Taxco famous.A graduate of the New York Fine Arts Institute and Auburn University, in Alabama (where he studied architecture), Spratling taught art and architecture at Tulane University, New Orleans, La., for eight years before going to Mexico in 1927. For two years he taught at the National Autonomous University of Mexico in Mexico City (1927–29) and then settled in Taxco, an old silver town (founded in 1528) that had long been in decay. He befriended silver artisans from all over Mexico and began the design of silver jewelry, artwork, tableware, and tea sets, opening his first taller, or workshop, on the Calle Las Delicias in 1933. After World War II his workshop went bankrupt, but he continued his work from a nearby ranch. His example inspired the founding of hundreds of competing workshops.Over the years Spratling also collected archaeological pieces (housed in the Museo Guillermo Spratling [William Spratling Museum] in Taxco) and founded a silvercraft school. He wrote several books, including Old Plantation...
