Georgian Old Mine Cut Diamond Stud Earrings in Silver & 18K Gold

About the Item

Offered is a one-of-a-kind pair of diamond stud earrings made with Georgian period old mine cut diamonds in their original old "pinched" or "cut down collet" settings. These antique hand-cut diamonds were part of an old damaged French brooch, from which I salvaged a number of stones. (I also have a few diamond rings available composed of elements from the same brooch) Made of patinated silver and 18K yellow gold, each earring holds a sparkly, cushiony, fine quality old diamond. I've added 18K yellow gold threaded posts with screwback style backings for extra security. Since the diamonds are hand cut, they each have slightly different cushiony shapes - one is a little more rectangular and one is a little more square. Estimated to be approximately .30 total carat weight, their wonderful old settings give them even more presence on the ear. Including their substantial settings, they measure approximately 5.4 x 5.3 & 5.1 x 4.8 mm. The diamonds are approximately 3.5 x 3 mm & 3.2 x 3mm. Both diamonds are bright, sparkly and with beautiful color and clarity. They remain in very good condition - under magnification I see one tiny surface imperfection near an edge that looks to be from a surface natural, rather than damage. The threaded gold posts measure approximately 22 mm in length and their screw-on backings are marked for 18K gold. On my scale, the pair has a weight of 1.31 grams - they are light and comfortable even for ears sensitive to weight. The diamond's settings are now open backed to make it easy and safe to clean the earrings. (Originally they had foil backings as was customary for the period - but foils are easily damaged by water/fluids, making them vulnerable to damage) There is a rich patina to the silver which contrasts beautifully with the white sparkle of the diamonds. Perfect for those that appreciate the character & history of antique diamonds and want something a bit special in a stud earring.

I have repurposed the diamonds of the piece to create these diamond studs and added new threaded back posts. Wear consistent with age and use.
