1970s Hand-Strung Sea Foam Ombre Lucite & Vintage Crystal Necklace

About the Item

The start of plastic jewellery was seen in the middle of the 19th century and it became very popular in the 1920's and 30's. Celluloid was the first quality of plastics which was used, then followed Bakelite and Catalin. The invention of Bakelite took place in 1909. Sometime later Catalin was produced. Catalin was easy for mass production and at the same time affordable. Du Pont is the pioneer in the field of Lucite and made it popular in the 1930’s as an alternative to Bakelite which was an expensive grade of plastic. Because of its versatility it became a popular choice for costume jewellery and became even more popular in 1950s for its Jelly Belly Jewellery. The popularity continues to date. The Lucite Beads have an extensive variation in their shape, sizes and a variety of vibrant colours. Lucite beads are sturdy and light weight when compared to other quality of plastics. This is an important reason behind its popularity. Vintage Lucite beads are often cut into chunky pieces but still do not add weight to a necklace made entirely of it. Lucite beads are mostly carved out of tubes of Lucite unlike many other plastic or glass beads which are pressed into a mould. Due to the procedure followed in manufacturing a Lucite bead, generally there are no seams in the bead. The majority of Lucite beads are vintage as they are no longer being produced. One can find out if it’s a reproduction of the Vintage Lucite bead, based on the quality and the workmanship. Prices will vary because of its rare availability.
