About the Item

Silver Jorma Laine Turun Hopea 1973 Necklace Width 3.7cm, Length 7.6cm, Depth 1.6cm Chain lenght 32cm Jorma Laine (1930-2002) was a Finnish jewelry designer, whose work in bronze and silver (more seldom gold) is easily recognizable. He developed a style of his own, very modernistic and often abstract, throughout the 60’s and 70’s. He was born on the 10th of July 1930, as the only son to his working class parents. Already at a young age he was gifted and spent most of his time drawing. After primary school, he attended the renowned art college Turun Piirustuskoulu (Turku Art School). During his illustrious career, he had his own company, Silver-Laine, but is perhaps best known for the designs he did for Turun Hopea. He also designed silver jewelry for Kultateollisuus. Later on, after a successful career in jewelry design, he retired to his cabin in the forest where he led a hermitlike life until his death by heart attack on the 27th of December 2002, 72 years old. Jorma Laine was during the 1960s and 1970s one of the foremost jewellery designers who created his own field within Finnish jewellery with his unique designs. Laine's jewellery can be perceived as stories about nature and its creatures and the human and different cultures. Laine graduated from Suomen Kultasepät Oy's (later Kultateollisuus) private goldsmith school in Turku in 1950 and worked for the firm until the mid-1950s, after which he started working for Kultasepät Salovaara in Turku. 1963 Laine returned to Kultateollisuus as its chief designer and worked there until 1969. During this period Laine founded his own firm and workshop Lai-For Koru. In 1972 Laine moved over to Turun Hopea as their chief designer and worked there until his retirement in 1985. Nature and works of art greatly inspired laine. He was especially fascinated by South and Central American works of art, cave paintings and the décor on Sami hand drums. These were used to create jewellery with simple and fractional forms and harmonic geometrical forms. Laine designed jewellery series for both Kultateollisuus and Turun Hopea

Vintage Sculptural Silver Necklace by Graziella Laffi
By Graziella Laffi
Located in Atlanta, GA
A bespoken sterling silver necklace with five roundel bell shape of gradual sizes linked by joint chains, designed and made by Graziella Laffi (1923-2009), Lima, Peru, circa 1965. The subtly hammered roundels evoke a sense of history with the form found in pre-Columbian culture, yet the necklace appears beyond ethnic, it exuberates a confident and bold modernism. The necklace with Peruvian Cultural Ministry label to verso. Graziella Laffi was born in 1923 in Florence, Italy to Gino Laffi, a silversmith and artist. Following her family tradition, Graziella enrolled in master classes after elementary school, focusing on design and painting. She next attended Escuela de Bellas Artes de Puerta Romana for three years, where Gino taught, and then to the Accademia di Belle Arti di Firenze, where she concentrated in architecture until the start of World War II. In 1947, Graziella, then twenty-four, immigrated with her parents to Peru. Gino later created a silversmith studio and showroom called Fabrica Laffi on Avenue Mexico, where Graziella initially learned her Craft. The Pre-Columbian culture in her adopted country inspired Graziella to travel and collect, which ultimately influence her design in the silver pieces. Graziella learned the metalworking techniques of the ancient Peruvian civilizations and rejected the current technology. She mostly used hammering, rolling and creating joints as the ancients do. As an ambassador of Peruvian culture, her work promoted the indigenous Peruvian art and rekindled the interest in its ancient heritage throughout South America, the United States and Europe. She exhibited her growing collection of Peruvian artifacts...
