Buccellati, Mario Jewelry Suite, 27 Carats, $450k Evaluation, His Masterpiece

About the Item

This early -1920-1930 Mario Buccellati parure is a masterpiece. Every hand-engraved, carved, inscribed, or otherwise created detail showcases the then young, ambitious goldsmith. A goldsmith who would become recognized as the finest goldsmith of the last century-and-a-half. This his extraordinary one-of-a-kind parure created and signed by Mario Buccellati features 27 carats of old mine diamonds set within unfathomably, maniacally, obsessively 18K yellow gold. Necklace, bracelet, unique clip-on earrings that can also be worn as pendants. This appears to be the only surviving complete jewelry suite create by the most celebrated goldsmith of the past century-and-a-half. Others may exist, but are locked away in Royal collections, out of public view and unavailable for sale. Jewelry created by Mario Buccellati is rare. The New York Times explains, "Mario Buccellati’s style was defined by honeycomb goldwork and delicate filigree detailing. Thin wires of precious metal were twisted and soldered together, incorporating textured finishes and precise techniques of engraving, etching and granulation, often enhanced with diamonds, baroque pearls or extraordinary colored stones. All remain signature elements of the Buccellati style." This singularly spectacular necklace, bracelet and pair of earrings is accompanied by a signed letter evaluation by the manager of the Beverly Hills Buccellati boutique for $450,000. My price is significantly below the evaluation because I was gifted this parure by my film agent, who acquired it at auction. (a long, faith-in-humanity-restoring story, but beside the point). I have searched extensively and cannot locate another complete parure by Mario himself. This exceedingly rare and ravishing suite of original and signed Mario Buccellati jewels consists of an approximately 16" necklace, a 7 ¾" bracelet, and a pair of 1" square clip earrings, all of which are set with dazzling old-mine cut diamonds. Each jewel has been created with a series of thick (2.20mm) 18K yellow gold panels, -hand worked by Mario with his own custom-made and Renaissance-era tools- into a floral and foliate motif. These exquisite panels are joined together with ornate oval links. The necklace, bracelet, and earrings all have a width of 1", making the proportions of this suite perfect. The workmanship is peerless. At the center of each panel is an old-mine cut diamond. Every hand-cut diamond is prong-set and surrounded by a constellation of eight tiny old rose-cut diamonds, each nestled within its own rub-over mounting. The 18 old-mine cut diamonds weigh approximately 24 carats and the 144 rose-cut diamonds add up to another 3 carats for a total approximate diamond weight of 27 carats. Old mine cut diamonds like these cannot be graded on the modern "4 C's" scale. The diamonds here were individually selected for their fire, color, and character. Most are "fancy" light yellow; several others would be classified as XYZ. Despite the dazzling glamour of the diamonds, the goldsmithing is the true star here: the textures M. Buccellati has created are so astonishing because even though the floral and foliate motif is a repeating pattern, each was created entirely by hand and without the use of any stamps or presses. Every leaf and every flower petal is completely hand-carved and unique even though seemingly identical elements abound. When you inspect the piece in person, no matter how much finery you have seen in this lifetime, you will experience awe. This suite was acquired at an auction and a discussion with the then-president of the company failed to provide details on who might have originally owned such a suite of jewels. Queen Maria Cristina of Spain was known to have commissioned jewels by Buccellati; Maria Callas lived near the boutique and was a regular customer. Needless to say, there are many Buccellati jewels in royal houses throughout Europe. Jewels are simply no longer created like this. It's the Breaker's Mansion of parures; the skills required to create such a work of art exist no more. This is a rare opportunity to acquire a suite of jewels created by one of history's most celebrated jewelers. A shockingly beautiful masterpiece. Please note: if you purchase this suite, you will receive a photocopy of the appraisal until the return period of three days has expired and you have decided to keep this treasure. At which point the original appraisal and it's envelope will be sent to you via express delivery.
