Classic Retro Era Italian Tubogas Collar Necklace in 18K Gold

About the Item

Weights & Measurements: Length: 17" Width: from 8mm at the ends to 16.5mm in the center Thickness: from 7.5mm at the ends to 9.5mm at the center Weight: 77.8 grams This classic and substantial tubogas choker was made in Italy sometime before the end of World War II. Bulgari's Serpenti watch showed up on Liz Taylor's wrist in the early 1960's, creating a craze for tubogas jewelry; you'll find a lot of Tubogas chokers dating from the 1970's, all riding the Bulgari-created wave for this sexy, flexible look. However, tubogas chains were first popularized by jewelers during World War II. With platinum restricted to military use, and with the access to gemstones and diamonds severely restricted by border controls and confiscations, jewelers in Europe and the United States used the one material they could still get: gold. The tubogas chain was a way of presenting gold that was new and interesting and did NOT involve diamonds or gems. Our chain was made during this pre-Bulgari, Retro Era tubogas craze. We know this because of the hallmark on the necklace's clasp; the specific style of the hallmark was only used for a six year period from 1938 to 1968. The maker of this piece was a firm called Castellarin Bruno, which was dissolved by 1958. Note that the color of the gold has a rich, distinctively rosy overtone; this is typical of Retro Era gold, which typically used a higher ratio of copper to silver in its gold alloying. The clasp is an integrated push-down box clasp with a hinged safety catch. This piece is in absolutely beautiful condition. It has been professionally cleaned and polished and looks as gloriously sexy as it did back when Mussolini might have been having second thoughts.
