About the Item

This ravishing antique aquamarine necklace dates to the Regency period (1811-1820). This crowning jewel from the era features an exquisite and huge emerald-cut aquamarine of the most sublime light blue. This glorious gem is set within a foliate framework that is set with dozens (84 to be exact) of the most brilliant, hand-cut old-mine diamonds. This significantly beautiful necklace was most likely created at some point between 1815-1820. The mesmerizing gem measures 16.92mm x 12.35mm and weighs approximately 16.5 carats. A similar piece can be seen worn in a tiara by Empress Josephine in one of the images of the day. Indeed, this spectacular treasure would be at home in any royal collection and possibly has been at some point in its unquestionably thrilling past. The aquamarine gem is set within silver to maximize the brilliance of the stone beneath the blaze of candles that would have surrounded one on all sides. Sixteen individual high-karat gold prongs hold the gem securely in place and there are four clusters of diamond-set leaves north, south, west, and east of the central stone. Each foliate cluster is anchored by a larger diamond. The pear-shaped stone on top weighs approximately .40 carats. The oval diamond positioned beneath the aquamarine also weighs approximately .40 carats and each of the two cushion-cut old-mine stones on either side weighs approximately .20 carats. The remaining old hand-cut diamonds total at least 1 carat. There are three additional collect-set diamonds that lead up to the 18K yellow gold chain. The 84 diamonds -approximately 2 carats- are charismatic old-mine cuts, except for one which appears to be a single-cut replacement. They range in color from near-colorless to very faint yellow. Old-mine cut diamonds are more popular now than ever and there's a good reason why: each is unique. Every old-mine diamond was hand-cut by an individual. No two are exactly alike, They possess a rich, deep fire unmatched by any other diamond. The delicate 18K yellow gold paperclip chain is quite beautifully constructed with slender rectangular links joined by ovals and was a tasteful later edition. The necklace is 19.5" in length, and the aquamarine and diamond pendant hangs down an additional 1 ¾ inches. Though you have to look for it, there is a gold bail at the very bottom of the necklace from which a separate element could be added, such as a collet-set diamond or perhaps a pearl. Your jeweler could also easily create a silver tiara frame upon which to mount this piece for a bride; something blue indeed. This is a magnificent antique jewel of supreme beauty, style, and importance.
